Neutrinos, Six Nines

Weather: Short spells of sunshine, chilly windy evening
Mood: Relaxed
Word: Lichen
Rosie: "Six nine" is now her code for "working" on a laptop or smartphone
Lunch: Homemade cheese crumpets, cheddar, crudités
Exercise: None, resting a sore right ankle
Booze: Staying sober on a Friday night was a challenge, but I diddled it
Purchased: Free tickets for guided tours at Natural History Museum's Science Uncovered event, Pret sandwich
Media: New album by Silver Seas, Chateau Revenge! Refreshing, feelgood sound. Read a feature in Guardian Films & Music, synced album on Spotify and Bob's your uncle. I love the modern world.
Notes: Unable to lie in, so up early and read the Guardian with a coffee. Get started on my morning news round and caught up on admin, e-mails. Evening spent at Science Uncovered event at NHM with my pal Frank. Enjoyed some behind-the-scenes tours to the DNA Lab and Herbarium, and watched the live recording of the Guardian Science Weekly podcast.

Blog: Neutrinos apparently travelling faster than the speed of light is obviously a very controversial finding. If accurate, then it undermines Einstein's Theory of Relativity and the past 100 years of physics. At the podcast recording, scepticism was the general tone - about the reliability of findings from the Gran Sasso research team and the process of physics journalism (results are reported in the media before being peer-reviewed). Obviously, the data needs more investigation but, as academic and BBC science presenter Jim Al-Khalili said, if it's true I'll eat my shorts.
