South London XI

Bit of Saturday night fun this time, but I couldn't help thinking about a new blueprint for football - a revitalised national game based on regional alliances and not the whims of Russian oligarchs, oil-rich Arabs, baseball-loving Yanks or English soft porn barons. For many modern-day football supporters, the links between a local community and its football team are getting weaker, so my plan is for a one-off British tournament between specific regions - South West, Midlands, Wales, North West, Glasgow, Highlands, Edinburgh, North East, East Anglia, South England, North & East London and South & West London. Something like that. Over the years, the two hotbeds of English footballing talent have been East London and the North West, so they would be favourites but I think South London would be in with a good shout too. Here's my first XI:

Subs: Rob Elliott (Charlton), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Anton Ferdinand (Sunderland), Nigel Reo-Coker (Aston Villa), Jimmy Bullard (Ipswich Town)
